8 Band essay

Employers sometimes ask people applying for jobs for personal information, such as their hobbies and interests, and whether they are married or single. Some people say this information may be relevant and useful. Others disagree.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

The resume is the reflection of a person’s educational qualification and ,nowadays, the information regarding the leisure time activities and marital status is required to be mentioned in it A section of likeminded people believe that the inclusion of this information is essential for the companies to select a candidate whereas others think that it is not required. This essay will explore both sides of the argument in detail and further discuss why I consider these details a crucial part of the job application.

On the one hand, the details of a person’s hobbies and other interests are required to critically understood his mental aptitude. In other words ,people who are bookworms and possess no interest in other free time activities might have an excellent theoretical knowledge, but they will have little experience of the actual world. Having hobbies induces multitasking capabilities in an individual ,which in turn would improve his performance at workplace .A recent survey by University of California conducted on  a large group of employees revealed that the workers ,who had interest outside their work ,displayed incredible efficiency at work as compared to the staff who did not have any hobbies. Furthermore, the knowledge of marital status is majorly included towards the recruitment of the female workers. If they are unmarried ,there is a risk involved of them getting relocated after marriage. This could adversely affect the companies because they invest their time and resources in making an individual a part of their workforce ;hence, if the worker chooses to move and resign ,it will waste the efforts of the company and they have to repeat the process of hiring.

The supporters of the opposite view argue that the employers should be concerned only with the educational qualifications of the person which speak volumes of the person’s credibility. In addition to this ,asking about someone’s interests is considered  as an invasion of the privacy ;thereby, what a person does outside the walls of office should not be a matter of concern for the companies .Thus ,the knowledge regarding the work should be a role criterion for the selection purposes.

To recapitulate, after weighing the arguments of both sides I believe that the personal information plays a profound role in judging the candidature of a person. This will aid the employers to select the best candidate to invest their resources in  and create a highly productive workforce.
