Nowadays, the world is facing various issues and overpopulation
is a matter of grave concern for many nations. Numerous methods have been
proposed to control the growing population, out of which, one method is to
impose taxes on a family when the number of children in the family exceeds to
that mentioned by the government. I disagree with this view because it could
lead to unnecessary burden on a few families and make their lives miserable.
This essay will discuss the demerits of such an approach in detail.
To begin with, the problem of overpopulation has majorly
been an issue in the developing and underdeveloped countries whereas the
developed countries have not witnessed a sharp rise in the number of residents.
The inhabitants of poor countries do not possess much income; therefore, the
idea of imposing further taxes would bring them a huge trouble. In fact, they
would feel cheated by the government for robbing them of their hard-earned
money which could lead to an outrage among the public against the government.
Alternatively, these people should be given a free access to the birth-control
measures, the lack of which is the prime cause of increasing population in
these areas. Further, awareness campaigns should be held to make the public
aware of the drastic effects overpopulation can have on the natural resources
and economy of a country. `
Furthermore, the increased financial burden can force people
to indulge in crimes as well. In China, for instance, the government introduced
hefty fines and punishment for parents if they had more than one child. Instead
of giving a positive result, it became a concern as many parents were reportedly
killing their second -born, as a result, increasing the crime rate of the
entire nation. Hence, other methods which do not involve monetary punishments,
should be adapted to deal with overpopulation in a right manner.
To conclude, I do not advocate imposing taxes on family to
curb the rising population.it could lead to a feeling of resentment among the people;
additionally, it could increase the rate of crimes. Adapting other lenient
methods could prove more beneficial instead.
