The past few decades have witnessed tremendous amount of money being spent on weddings and other events. A large section of the society believes in organizing lavish and large –scale ceremonies to flaunt their wealth. This essay will discuss further why i think that this trend is a negative development.

To commence with, the expense involved in a marriage has become a status symbol which brings excessive burden and stress for the family of a girl. This affects especially the people from lower socio-economic background as they consider it an obligation to spend a fortune on the wedding ceremony .Consequently, they begin saving their hard –earned money in the dowry as soon as a daughter is born in the family only to obtain false appraisal from the society at her wedding. Futhermore, the cases of feticide are increasing by a large extent which is usually committed  to avoid spending hefty amounts at the marriages .In India ,the number of feticides is highest in the state of Punjab where the culture of big-fat weddings is extremely popular .Therefore, it can be concluded that spending huge sums of money on weddings by privileged families brings numerous demerits .

The trend towards people spending colossal amount of money on marriages is perhaps even damaging because of the harmful effects on environment. In illustration, a lot of money is spent on decorations and preparation of food. The most used material for wedding decorations is plastic. After the marriage is over, the decoration items are thrown away. To elucidate, a rich family from South Africa organized their son’s marriage near the beaches of Cape Town in 2001.This wedding generated enormous amount of waste and resulted in the death of many sea animals which consumed the waste items thinking they were food. Also, the government had to spend huge amount of money to clean up the garbage. As far as food is concerned, it is also wasted in big weddings. As per the statistics, food wastage has increased by 20 percent since 2005 and the primary reason is the way people have started celebrating family events.

To recapitulate, holding expensive marriages is utterly unwise because it brings distress to the poor households , lead to a surge in the cases of female feticide, increase in food wastage and even proved hazardous for the environment.
